MICROBIOME MANAGEMENT
- A healthy balance of microbes in your gut is key to maintaining a happy, healthy bowel and promoting good bowel function.
- A poor diet (excess sugar and fat) can induce bacterial dysbiosis (an imbalance between good and bad bacteria), which may be a precursor for disease or worsening symptoms.
- A consistently well balanced, predominantly plant based diet, high in fibre will encourage good bacterial growth.
- It may be possible to boost your bacteria by eating occasional fermented food and drinks such as artisanal cheese, yoghurt, sauerkraut, kefir or kombucha. Research is ongoing in this area.
You can try a probiotic – take it daily as per manufacturers instructions for at least four weeks to see if your symptoms improve. If it does not appear to help then you could try an alternative brand.
