Fibre Intake

FIBRE INTAKE

Fibre management is key in IBS. Fibre is important because it:

  • feeds your microbiome to build your immunity
  • mechanically regulates your bowel movements by increasing stool bulk and viscosity
  • helps control glucose and fat absorbtion

At this stage it is important to eat a balanced fibre intake, getting a little bit from fruit, veg, grains, nuts, seeds and pulses.

Work on dietary diversity which encourages a varied fibre intake from day to day.

Add fibre with caution, your bowel will respond better to a slower introduction of new fibres. Too much fibre and the incorrect fibre balance can worsen your IBS symptoms.

Later we will discuss fibre in more detail when we look at subtypes.
